Research with ArkDes
Out of over a hundred applicants, Ed's second kiosk was one of five projects awarded an ArkDes Think Tank research grant. With the research, we wanted to investigate what is required to create a new public space. Is adding a kiosk enough?

A research collaboration supported by ArkDes Think Tank The state-run ArkDes Think Tank announces funding for practical research in architecture, design and construction every year. In 2021, Ed's second kiosk was one of the five projects awarded research funding, among over 300 applicants! Thanks to funding from Arkdes, the project became something bigger than just an ice cream kiosk - With support from Akdes and through collaboration with the Chamlers course Dare to build, we were able to offer 30 participants - building enthusiasts and architecture students, from all over the world, the opportunity to learn how to build - together for a week. We were also able to study the process, work with local inclusion and engagement - through seminars, open houses and a football match with residents of the village of Håbol where the kiosks were built.
How is a public space created?
With the research, we wanted to investigate what is required to create a new public space. Is it enough to add a kiosk? How can the kiosk in turn function as a connector between local networks? What combination of functions is needed for the place to function in the long term? The project also explores the importance of the process; participation in design, planning and construction, communication with the local area, the importance of the new becoming part of the history of the place. Read more about the research and the process in the project's final report compiled by Egnahemsfabriken in Tjörn, which led the process.
